Mining Education Development
Looking at the development that has mining in our country, we see that it has ranked Chile as a global giant. Unfortunately, society still does not see the benefits that mining gives the economy of our country.
We must make significant positive changes in communication, focusing on combating discrimination and misinformation that exists for our business. This aims to achieve a greater affinity with society.
One solution would be, for example, provide information on mining in secondary education, realizing that there are still people who believe that Chuquicamata is the largest copper mine in the world, or Codelco is the largest exporter of our country. This can not be happening in 2011.
Chile in the next five years will invest 40 billion dollars in mining, this, not to mention the superlative investments that have historically done, demonstrating, unequivocally, that there is an increased investment in our country. However, our society does not recognize.
Today our country is the largest producer of copper in the whole world with about 35% of production, followed by Peru, which holds 8%. These simple figures show a clear increase compared to the same statistics 20 years ago, and a significant advantage over other countries.
Parallel to the increase that we had the country in terms of production, has seen a steady rise in international copper prices, to levels never before imagined. This point should be mentioned in reference to the references made by the experts who predicted in 2004 that this value will never exceed the value of the dollar.
On the other hand, it is important to mention that all this around the copper boom, has been thanks to the efforts made to overcome mining. Is always looking for the best way of working using: technology, protecting the environment by supporting and improving the quality of life of the communities surrounding their operations, strengthening the security of their workers, among many other initiatives.
It is very important that society learns to give space to the mining sector so that it can speak, detailing what he does and how.
Multinational mining companies play an important role since arriving in our country carry major investments, and provide more and better knowledge of the national mining. Nonetheless, they are often criticized and discriminated against because they are foreigners, reflecting historical origin bias, which has nothing to do with their current reality ..
Finally, as Chile was a geographically small country but globally indicated as “emerging” needs to strengthen its international ties and large multinational companies, particularly mining, can lead us to other places in the world.
Thus, we must realize that mining has been part of Chile since its infancy and as industry is seeking to grow, not only for their benefit, but also towards the country.
