It also reports that Carlos Santa Cruz (Director of Minera Yanacocha) stressed that this situation was crucial to stop the impunity of those who damage private property and block roads.

“There is a law pending in Congress that would give (…) the legal framework to improve safety in mining communities. Too often, the police arrest the instigators of violence against mining, but local prosecutors would be released under pressure from the community. “

He adds, “the law expects to allow police to move a detainee to a different jurisdiction, which reduces the likelihood that losfiscales yield to local demands. The ambassadors agreed to evaluate a meeting with heads of political parties. ” Read the rest of this entry »
