(FNM) According to statistics released recently by the Ministry of Information Industry and China, the country surpassed South Korea in 2010, in terms of capacity building and portfolio of orders for new ships.

Statistics show that between January and December 2010, Chinese shipyards completed construction of 65.6 million deadweight tons, a figure which represents an increase of 54.6% over the previous year. They also received construction orders for more than 75 million deadweight tons, almost three times the value obtained a year earlier.

Chinese analysts linked to the shipbuilding industry, attributed the rapid growth of activity in recent years, increasing domestic demand associated with growth capacity of the economy.
